About This Trail

Oldsmobile Hill stands as the most iconic single destination in the entire Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, a massive dune formation that draws riders and spectators from across the Southwest for its combination of challenging terrain, social energy, and unforgettable spectacle. Located approximately two miles south of the older Competition Hill in the central Glamis dune field, Oldsmobile Hill is accessible via the Sand Highway, a relatively flat corridor that most vehicles can navigate to reach the base of this legendary formation. The hill's face begins at roughly 25 degrees and steepens progressively to around 40 degrees near the top, creating a natural amphitheater where riders test their machines against gravity and soft sand.

The approach to Oldsmobile Hill introduces riders to one of the defining terrain features of Glamis: deep-rutted whoops, the mogul-like sand formations that develop along heavily traveled routes. These rhythmic bumps test suspension, vehicle handling, and rider endurance as you bounce and slam your way toward the base of the hill. Once you arrive, the scene is unlike anything else in offroad recreation. During peak weekends, rows of spectators line the base of the hill, watching as a constant parade of vehicles attempts the climb. The variety is staggering: everything from purpose-built sand rails with over 1,000 horsepower to stock Jeeps and lifted pickup trucks take their shot at conquering the face.

Beyond Oldsmobile Hill lie some of the biggest bowls in all of Glamis, deep amphitheater-shaped sand formations that provide advanced and expert terrain for experienced riders. These bowls demand respect and skill, as the soft sand, steep walls, and lack of visual reference points can disorient riders quickly. Among the critical terrain hazards in this area are witches eyes, wind-carved depressions hidden on the backside of dunes that can range from tire-sized pockets to swimming-pool-sized craters, and razorbacks, knife-edge dune ridges that are steep on both sides with abrupt drops that can catch riders completely off guard.

Within the hierarchy of Glamis hills, Oldsmobile sits at a moderate-to-difficult level. It is significantly more challenging than the original Competition Hill but far less extreme than China Wall, which rises over 300 vertical feet with the steepest grade in the entire dune system. This middle position makes Oldsmobile accessible enough for intermediate riders to attempt while still providing a genuine challenge that keeps experienced riders coming back. The deep, soft sand on the upper slopes means raw horsepower matters, but line selection and momentum management are equally important for a successful climb.

The social dimension of Oldsmobile Hill is central to its identity. After Competition Hill was shut down after dark in 2002 due to excessive late-night gatherings, Oldsmobile Hill became the primary nighttime social hub of Glamis. After sunset, campfires spring up at the base, vehicles run the hill with headlights blazing against the dark sky, and the energy continues until the early morning hours. Major events like Camp RZR, Polaris's massive annual gathering, center much of their activity around the Oldsmobile Hill area and draw enormous crowds that transform the surrounding dunes into a temporary city of tents, trailers, and machines.

The 360-degree views from the summit encompass the full scale of the Algodones Dunes, a field stretching 45 miles long and 6 miles wide with peaks reaching over 300 feet. To the north, the Chocolate Mountains rise above the desert floor, and on clear days the view extends south toward the Mexican border. The interplay of light and shadow across the dune faces shifts dramatically throughout the day, with sunrise and sunset transforming the sand into a canvas of amber, gold, and deep orange.

The riding season at Oldsmobile Hill runs from October through April, with major holiday weekends bringing the largest crowds and most electric atmosphere. Whether you come to attempt the climb, watch the spectacle from the base, or explore the challenging bowls behind the hill, Oldsmobile Hill delivers the definitive Glamis experience.
