About This Trail
The Pineville/Northfork Area anchors the Southern Cluster of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System, delivering over 400 connected miles across four trail systems, the most continuous offroad riding network east of the Mississippi. Based out of the towns of Pineville, Northfork, and Keystone in southern West Virginia, this hub offers more family-friendly terrain than the Western Cluster while still providing enough challenge to keep experienced riders engaged all day. Ashland Resort and Wild Willy's ATV Rezort serve as the primary base camps, offering direct trail access, permits, rentals, fuel, and lodging right at the trailheads.
The Pinnacle Creek Trail System is the scenic crown jewel of the Southern Cluster, with 80 miles of trails radiating from its trailhead at 2733 Pinnacle Road in Pineville. The trail breakdown leans heavily toward accessible riding, roughly 33 percent green (easiest) and 41 percent blue (more difficult), with only 18 percent rated black diamond or above. This makes Pinnacle Creek an excellent starting point for riders who want scenic mountain views without extreme technical difficulty. The mountaintop overlooks here are among the best in the entire Hatfield-McCoy network, with panoramic views stretching across the Appalachian ridgelines. The area also sits less than an hour from world-class whitewater rafting on the New River and snow skiing, making it a strong base for families combining offroad riding with other outdoor activities.
Indian Ridge sits at the center of the Southern Cluster, functioning as the main connector between the other three systems. With 70 miles of trails near the town of Northfork, Indian Ridge offers a balanced mix of difficulty levels and some of the most rewarding ridgeline views in the system. The trailhead is located near Ashland, and riders can access the ATV-friendly towns of Northfork and Keystone directly from the trails. McDowell County, where Indian Ridge is located, allows ATV riding on nearly all public roadways, making town access seamless, you can ride from the trails straight to fuel and food without trailering. Indian Ridge is the recommended base for multi-day trips because of its central position. The connector trail to Pinnacle Creek alone is over 12 miles, so riders staging from Indian Ridge can efficiently reach all four systems without backtracking.
The Pocahontas Trail System adds 60 miles and provides the easiest access from Interstate 77, making it the most convenient entry point for riders traveling from out of state. The trail begins in the historic town of Bramwell, once known as the "Millionaire Town" during the coal boom era for its concentration of wealthy coal barons. Bramwell's preserved Victorian architecture and historic downtown give riders a unique trailhead experience before heading into the mountains. Pocahontas connects directly to Indian Ridge, Pinnacle Creek, and Warrior, tying together the full Southern Cluster network.
The Warrior Trail System rounds out the cluster with 50 miles of trails based in the city of War, West Virginia's most southern city, right at the Virginia border. Warrior is best known for its panoramic overlooks, offering some of the longest sightlines in the Hatfield-McCoy system. The ridgeline trails here run along exposed mountaintops with views that stretch for miles in every direction. Warrior connects back to the other three systems, completing the loop that gives this cluster its massive connected mileage.
The terrain across the Southern Cluster is characterized by rolling mountain ridges, creek valleys with water crossings, and dense hardwood forest. Compared to the Western Cluster's Rockhouse and Devil Anse systems, the Southern Hub is notably more forgiving, riders consistently note that even the black diamond trails here are manageable in stock machines without aftermarket modifications. This makes the Southern Cluster ideal for intermediate riders looking to build confidence or groups with mixed skill levels who want to ride together.
The Southern Hub accommodates UTVs, ATVs, and dirt bikes across all four systems. Wide connector trails handle full-size side-by-sides comfortably, while dedicated single-track sections on Pinnacle Creek and Indian Ridge give dirt bike riders their own terrain to explore.
A local guide familiar with the Southern Cluster can help you plan multi-day routes that connect all four systems efficiently, find the best overlooks, and avoid the longer connector trails when time is limited. With 400-plus miles to explore, having someone who knows the network saves hours of backtracking and ensures you hit the highlights that match your skill level and vehicle.
