About This Trail

The Southern Dunes encompass the Gordon's Well and Buttercup Valley sections of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, stretching along the southern edge of the Algodones Dunes near Interstate 8 and the Mexican border. This area offers some of the widest and most varied riding terrain in the entire dune system, combining technical dune sets with expansive open flats, all within easy reach of a major interstate highway that makes it the most convenient entry point for visitors traveling from Arizona or San Diego. The dune field reaches its maximum width of approximately five miles in this southern section, providing an enormous playground that ranges from absolute beginner terrain to advanced challenges within a single riding area.

Gordon's Well occupies the more technical side of the southern zone, featuring tight dune sets toward the interior with larger bowls toward the front and two major competition hills that draw experienced riders looking to test their skills and machines. The dunes here are notably larger than those on the Buttercup side, with steeper faces and deeper bowls that demand more power, better driving technique, and greater sand reading ability. The terrain rewards aggressive riders who understand momentum management and can read the subtle changes in sand texture and angle that determine whether you crest a dune or get buried on its face.

The most famous daily event at the entire Imperial Sand Dunes takes place near Gordon's Well. Every afternoon around 5 PM during the sand season, crowds spontaneously gather along the Sand Highway as vehicles line up for informal drag races on the packed sand. Hundreds of machines run the drags, many popping wheelies and putting on spectacular displays of power and skill while spectators line both sides of the course. The setting sun casts golden light across the sand, creating a backdrop that transforms this grassroots drag racing scene into one of the most photogenic experiences in all of offroad recreation. No organization or schedule governs this tradition; it simply happens every day during the season through the collective enthusiasm of the riding community.

Buttercup Valley offers a dramatically different experience on the opposite side of the southern zone. Open flats extend for miles, providing the widest, most forgiving riding terrain in the entire ISDRA system. These expansive flat areas are arguably the best location in all of Glamis for absolute beginners to learn dune riding, with gentle terrain, long sightlines, and ample room to practice without the intimidation of steep dune faces or crowded trails. A large competition hill on the Buttercup side provides a moderate challenge for riders ready to progress beyond the flats, and rideable dune formations surround the open areas for those wanting to gradually increase difficulty.

The historical significance of the southern zone adds a dimension unique among Glamis riding areas. The Old Plank Road, a seven-mile wooden highway built across the dunes to allow automobile travel in the early twentieth century, was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1971. Remnants of the original road and a 1,500-foot replica can be viewed at the west end of Gray's Well Road off I-8, with an interpretive monument approximately three miles west of the Sand Hills interchange. This connection to early automotive history resonates with modern offroad enthusiasts who are following in the tire tracks of the earliest motorists to challenge these sands.

The Buttercup Ranger Station off Gray's Well Road near I-8 provides maps, permits, and emergency services for the southern zone. Buttercup Campground offers a large staging area with level ground, pit toilets, and trash dumpsters on easy-access terrain. The riding season runs from October through April, with permits required at a cost of 35 dollars per week when purchased in advance or 50 dollars per week on site. Interstate 8 access from Exit 151 means riders from Yuma, Arizona can be on the sand within 30 minutes, and San Diego visitors can reach the area in roughly three hours, making the Southern Dunes the most accessible entry point to the world of Glamis dune riding.
