About This Trail

Windrock Park is the largest privately owned off-road park in the United States, encompassing 73,000 acres of rugged East Tennessee mountain terrain with over 300 miles of trails ranging from easy gravel roads to extreme rock crawling. Located in Oliver Springs just 20 minutes northwest of Knoxville with convenient access to both I-75 and I-40, Windrock is one of the most accessible expert-level riding destinations in the Southeast. The park is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including night riding, making it one of the few offroad destinations in the country where you can ride any time you want.

The trail system uses four difficulty classifications: easy, moderate, difficult, and extremely difficult. Easy trails follow gravel roads through the property with scenic views and gentle grades, perfect for families or riders looking for a relaxed cruise. Moderate trails introduce dirt, rocks, and ruts that require basic offroad skills. Difficult trails step up significantly with larger rocks, steeper grades, and more demanding terrain. The extremely difficult trails are where Windrock earns its reputation, boulder fields, cliff edges, and technical rock sections that challenge even the most experienced riders in purpose-built machines.

Trail 51, known as Panther Rock, is the park's most famous route and carries a Jeep Badge of Honor designation, one of a select group of trails nationwide recognized by Jeep for their difficulty and significance to the offroad community. The trail takes riders through the northeast section of the park to a breathtaking overlook at Panther Rock, with panoramic views that reward the technical effort required to get there. For Jeep owners, completing Trail 51 and earning the Badge of Honor is a bucket-list achievement that draws riders from across the country.

The park sits atop the Cumberland Plateau at elevations exceeding 3,000 feet, and the Buffalo Mountain Wind Farm, visible from several trail sections, adds a distinctive visual element to the ridgeline riding. The higher elevation means cooler temperatures than the surrounding valleys, making summer riding more comfortable and winter riding more dramatic with occasional frost and fog wrapping the mountaintops.

Windrock welcomes dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs, and full-size four-wheel-drive vehicles including Jeeps and trucks. This broad vehicle acceptance is one of the park's strengths, groups with different machines can all ride the same property, choosing trails that match their vehicles. Side-by-side rentals are available at the General Store for riders who want to experience the park without bringing their own machine, though reservations are recommended as rental units book up quickly during peak weekends and events.

The park's campground offers a full range of lodging options set high on the hill with spectacular views. Deluxe cabins provide full amenities for riders who want comfort after a hard day on the trails, while primitive cabins offer a more rustic experience. RV sites with full hookups accommodate larger rigs, and primitive campsites are available for tent campers. Two bathhouses and two pavilions serve the campground, and the General Store stocks supplies, parts, and fuel. For riders who prefer off-property lodging, the proximity to Knoxville means hotels, restaurants, and offroad shops are all within a short drive.

Beyond the trail network, Windrock Park includes an outdoor shooting range and a cross-country and downhill mountain bike park, giving non-riders in your group alternative activities. The park hosts regular events throughout the year including organized rides, competitions, and meetups that draw large crowds from across the Southeast.

The terrain at Windrock is defined by the Cumberland Plateau's sandstone geology, exposed rock shelves, boulder fields, and ledges that create natural obstacles throughout the difficult and extremely difficult trail sections. The forested sections run through mixed hardwoods that provide canopy cover on the lower-elevation trails, while the ridgeline sections open up to long-range mountain views. Rain can make the rock sections significantly more challenging, adding another dimension to an already demanding riding environment.

A land use permit is required for all riders, daily rates range from $17 to $25 depending on vehicle type.

Booking a local guide at Windrock is the best way to navigate the massive 300-mile trail network efficiently. A guide can match trails to your vehicle and skill level, lead you to Trail 51 and the best overlooks, and keep you off the extremely difficult sections that can end a trip quickly for unprepared riders.
